Flood control gates are used to regulate the flow of water as part of a water management system. Floodgates are typically auto- mated and are controlled by the existing conditions of water patterns. Floodgates are a vital part of a flood response system, and may be the most effective method of preventing flood destruction. Gates have already been integrated into Florida water management districts and play a major role in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Floodgates can also improve the quality of water by preventing overly acidic water to enter the main supply, instead diverting water for further treatment.
